Transmission security and IEC 62443 SL2 compliance

BitStream S.A. team is finalizing the work on the latest industrial router, which is set to enter the company’s portfolio in response to growing market demands for cybersecurity and secure communication in critical infrastructures. The new device has been designed for securely extending transmission beyond the boundaries of strategically important facilities, such as power plants, telecommunications centers, or public infrastructure systems.**

Purpose: Secure extension of transmission beyond the protected zone
The new BitStream router enables a secure connection between OT and IT network elements and the outside world by designing a DMZ zone or communication segmentation according to best cybersecurity practices. This answers the needs of critical infrastructure operators who must secure data transmission while enabling access to external services – for example, remote transmission of operational data, monitoring, or integration with the cloud.

L2 and L3 encryption: Highest data confidentiality
The BitStream router is equipped with hardware encryption at both OSI layer 2 (L2) and layer 3 (L3):

  • L2: Ethernet frame encryption capability (e.g., MACsec), protection of transmission between ports, secure VLAN construction.

  • L3: Advanced tunneling, VPN (IPsec/SSL), dynamic traffic filtering, and authorization of network flows.

Thanks to this architecture, it is possible to secure both direct industrial connections and communication between network segments — in line with the latest NIS2 guidelines and EU cybersecurity directives.

Declaration of compliance with IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2
The device is designed and developed according to the IEC 62443-4-2 standard at Security Level 2 (SL2). This standard guarantees:

  • Resistance to typical cyber-attacks and unauthorized actions.

  • Advanced authentication, access management, and log auditing mechanisms.

  • Individual configuration of permission levels and automatic detection of intrusion attempts.

  • Support for regular security updates and for segmentation and isolation of network traffic.

IEC 62443-4-2 SL2 is currently one of the most demanding industrial standards recommended for infrastructure requiring protection against targeted attacks.

Open collaboration, after-sales support
BitStream declares full transparency of the product deployment process, offers consultations with expert teams, and provides training on implementing the router in environments with the highest security requirements. The company is already developing a support system and a firmware update cycle in line with the best industry practices.

Summary
The new BitStream S.A. router is a highly specialized industrial solution dedicated to securely extending transmission beyond the perimeter of critical facilities—both at L2 and L3 levels. It meets the stringent cybersecurity standards IEC 62443-4-2 SL2, making it a future-proof choice for securing OT networks in energy, transport, or industrial automation. The device launch is expected soon, with pilot deployments planned in cooperation with key national and worldwide infrastructure operators.
